Golf as we know it today, originated from Scotland in the 15th century. However some historians believe that the game of golf dates back even further than this and there is a debate as to who first introduced it.
The Old Course at St.Andrews, is known worldwide and besides having famous golfers Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods play here, many celebrities have also played a round of golf in St. Andrews during ‘celebrity golf tournaments’; Samuel L Jackson, Hugh Grant, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones to name a few. It was at this course that the 18 hole format game of golf was set.
Surprisingly there are a number of golf courses around Lake Como; Menaggio, Montorfano, Carimate (between Milan and Como), Lecco – many of which you will need a car to reach.
Golf Club Menaggio and Cadenabbia
This golf course at Menaggio is one of the oldest in Italy. Lake Como was the preferred destination for elite British Tourists during the 1800’s. In order to bring a little bit of ‘Britishness’ to the lake the Golf Club of Cadenabbia and Menaggiowas founded by Banker Henry John Mylius and another three British Gentlemen in January 1907. The first 9-hole golf course was built in the vicinity of Croce which is situated on the mountainside above Menaggio. The Menaggio golf course has seen a certain Mr George Clooney here on a number of occasions.
Golf Club Lecco
The 18-hole golf course in Lecco is situated between Lake Pusiano and Lake Annone di Brianza. The club was founded in 1996 by former Royal Golf Club Sant ‘Anna. The course is surrounded by lush green vegetation and is fairly level so easier to walk around.
