Paragliding for many extreme sports enthusiasts can be both recreational and competitive. It is not for the faint-hearted, launching yourself off the top of a mountain for fun! This is the one time that the phrase “take a run and jump” could be taken literally.
Materials such as ripstop polyester or nylon fabric (non-porous material) are used to make the canopy of paragliders and parachutes. The canopy is made up of two layers of fabric which are connected together with materials on the inside. This gives the look of the canopy having a row of small compartments. Most of these ‘compartments’ have a vent at the leading edge and it is the airflow through the vents that inflate the canopy and keep you gliding through the sky for hours. The shape of the canopy and where the suspension lines attach to it all add to the aerodynamics and manoeuvrability. The pilot is strapped into a harness that is attached to the suspension lines of the paraglider with carabiners.
Controlling and guiding the paraglider is mainly with the use of brakes; which the pilots holds in each hand. These brakes are connected to either end of the canopy. This helps with speed and steering. However using bodyweight is also used to steer the paraglider.
This sport is very portable as everything you need for paragliding packs up into a rucksack which you can then carry on your back and travel easily by public transport to reach your destination take-off spot.
Many people opt for trying a tandem paraglide where you will be teamed up with an experienced pilot. There are a few companies in Lake Como that provide tandem paraglide jumps; a shuttle bus from Bellagio to Mount Nuvolone (enquire at the tourist office in Bellagio – Cavalcalario Club).
Brevart situated in the town of Sorico also have pilots with over 20 years experience of paragliding.
Feel the sky – at Gera Lario a town at the Northern tip of the lake. Tandem flights with experienced assistants – contact Fabio +39 328 577 4414 or have a look at his youtube video clips (search for fabiocontiwalkabout) and this will give you clips of the tandem jumps over Lake Como.
