The game of tennis is thought to date back to 12th century northern France. It was originally played by striking the ball with the palm of your hand and rackets were not introduced until the 16th century. Tennis was extremely popular in both France and England but is now popular in many countries worldwide.
One of the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world is the The Championships at Wimbledon, England. The other three famous Grand Slam tennis tournaments are; French Open, Australian Open and the US Open. The current Champion of the 2012 Men’s Singles is Rodger Federer from Switzerland and the current Champion of the 2012 Women’s Singles is Serena Williams from America. Winners of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games are; Andy Murray from Britain – Men’s Singles and Serena Williams from America – Women’s Singles.
Some of the most notable and famous tennis players from Italy are; Adriano Panatta, Andreas Seppi, Davide Sanguinetti, Flavia Pennetta, Francesca Schiavone, Karin Knapp and Simone Bolelli to name a few.
The rising popularity of tennis means that you can find tennis courts and clubs just about anywhere. There are many in the Lake Como area with the possibility of hiring equipment (telephone or email beforehand to double check). Costs may vary considerably depending on how long you hire the court for, whether you need to hire equipment and which tennis court you are playing at.
