With Lake Como in such a fantastic location, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to walking and hiking in this area. Regardless of whether you just want to take a gentle stroll through quaint villages or a more challenging hike up through the mountains, you can easily pick up information leaflets on walks in and around the area from local tourists offices.
There are many hiking paths off piste (many of which are not maintained) which are quite overgrown and rugged, but for the scenery aspect, nothing will match it. Monte Grona near Menaggio, Grigne Mountains around Lecco and the Legnone mountains around Colico are all popular hikes. The climb of these hikes ranging between 1736 metres to 2600 metres. Unless you are very experienced in hiking in the mountains, it is recommended that you go with an experienced guide. There are lots of walking and hiking tours in the area.
For spectacular lake views without all the hiking, why not take a cable-car ride. You can take the cable-car in Como up to Brunate (700 metres) or from Argegno up to Pigra (881 metres).
For your own safety, check the weather conditions or ask an expert before going up into the mountains. If possible let someone know what route you are taking incase of an emergency. Ensure that you have the correct clothing as the weather can change quickly up in mountains as well as some food and drink to replenish your energy levels. Don’t let yourself become dehydrated.
* Beware of wild boars in the forests surrounding the lake.
