The best places to go swimming in Lake Como are the northern towns like Domaso and Gravedona as there are more beaches (mostly pebble) available with lots more space. This area has the cleanest water because it is close to the River Adda that runs into the lake.
It is not possible to swim in the southern part of the lake due to pollution through heavy industry and neglect. However filters are continuously being installed and thanks to new EU laws regarding water pollution, Italy is slowly but surely taking the necessary action to solve this problem.
If you are staying at one of the luxury hotels on Lake Como, then you may have access to an outdoor swimming pool. Alternatively, if you do not fancy swimming in the lake there are a number of ‘lidos’ scattered all around the lakes shores, some of which have outdoor pools open to the public for a small fee.
