Britannia Excelsior ***

Situated in Cadenabbia/Griante (a small residential village on the western branch of Lake Como), this hotel is in a prime spot and overlooks Bellagio.  Ideally located for reaching public transport; bus stop directly outside the hotel or the ferry port which is only a few steps away and also within easy walking distance of the famous Villa Carlotta.  It is also possible to reach Menaggio on foot, but take care as there are two sections of the road where there are no pedestrian footpaths.

The hotel dates back to 1830 and was built by the Bellini family.  A popular area with British tourists and to date still is.  Many famous people came to this particular village; Giuseppe Verdi who composed the beautiful aria of the Traviata in peace and quiet of Villa Ricordo (Villa Margherita). Stendhal spent a great deal of time here composing many of his masterpieces including the Chartreuse de Parme. This small village became so popular that it even attracted royalty; Queen Victoria, Nicholas II of Russia, the Kaiser Guglielmo II, Prince Umberto di Savoia (before becoming the last king of Italy), Pope Pio XI.
