Bellano is a pretty village located on the eastern side of the lake, just north of Varenna. There are a multitude of delightful shops hidden from view up the narrow cobbled streets away from the lakeside. Here you can see the medieval character of the houses and archways dating back to the 17th century. This small quaint village has everything you need; shops, trattorias, restaurants and cafes.
Bellano is well serviced with regard to transport as there is a slip road leading in and out of Bellano onto the motorway that leads south. From Varenna there are train connections to Lecco and Milan and there is also a landing stage for boats which can take you across the lake to the towns of Menaggio, Cadenabbia and Bellagio.
Many visitors come to Bellano to see the gorge of the Pioverna stream (orrido). In the spring, melting snow swells the stream and over time, this has cut a deep narrow gorge through the rocks above the town. You are able to explore the gorge through a series of ladders and walkways.
Bellano has the most famous Yacht club on the lake and offers sailing courses for both children and adults at all levels. You can also try watersports at neighbouring Dervio and Varenna.
There are memorials to Tommaso Grossi (19th-century writer) and Sigismondo Boldoni (17th-century scientist) on the lake front. It was another member of the Boldoni family who introduced the silk industry to Como.
There are also lots of walks and hikes that you can co on from here or from nearby Varenna.
