Cycling is an extremely popular sport in Italy and it is no wonder considering the prestigious Giro d’Italia takes place annually between May and June. Italian drivers are very aware of cyclists on the road, however you will still get the ones that drive past just that little bit too close for comfort, so as a cyclist, you need to be focused when travelling along the winding lakeside roads and not wavering all over the place.
You will see numerous cyclists in the summer months along the winding roads by the lakeside. Traffic can be quite manic during the summertime along the lakeside with mile-long queues. but with a bicycle you can avoid having to wait in these queues and just nip through the traffic. It is a lot easier to stop off for a drink and a bite to eat as you can pretty much take your bicycle with you and no need to look for a parking space.
There are various cycling tours offered by the following companies; Bicycling in Italy, Lake Como Youth Hostel (Menaggio), Thomson Bike Tours and Como Lago Bike.
Ensure that you wear a bicycle helmet and have water with you at all times. If you think you will be cycling in the dark at all, then make sure you have lights on your bicycle and if possible a reflective vest to wear.
